Trams In India January 29' 2018January 29' 2018 Urban Précis TeamLeave a comment Romantic Trams – Trams were introduced in Kolkata in 1873, followed by many cities including Mumbai, Chennai, Patna, Kanpur, Delhi etc from 1870-1910. These public transport were withdrawn from every city except Kolkata during 1930-1960 owing to financial constraints and urban congestion. In Kolkata trams continue to operate 145 years since their introduction. Walking through the Lal Kuan locality on Delhi-Faridabad border, one confronts the sharp line of division between natural, necessary and encroachment. The informal housing as well as new planned development is taking up spaces abandoned after closure of mining activities. People taking up the land are building to sustain their lives but are essentially developing by altering the natural terrain composed of Aravali hills.
