Urban centres generate huge bulks of waste, management of which is a global concern. The lives of those tackling with this menace are often overlooked in front of magnitude of the dumps. Seen here is a boy managing trash in an urban region of central African country of Nicaragua.

Bhanpur Landfill Site Bhopal

Black and white constructs plethora of metaphors in mind. ‘Landfill gulls’, hawks and stench, mark their territory over the skies of Bhanpur Landfill. This area signifies and marks the decaying rotten side of the city. An unplanned unscientific dumping of waste spread across 57.80 acres, has been continuously exploited for more than four decades.

Trams In India

Romantic Trams – Trams were introduced in Kolkata in 1873, followed by many cities including Mumbai, Chennai, Patna, Kanpur, Delhi etc from 1870-1910. These public transport were withdrawn from every city except Kolkata during 1930-1960 owing to financial constraints and urban congestion. In Kolkata trams continue to operate 145 years since their introduction. Necessity, Encroachment or Sustainability?

Encroachment? Walking through the Lal Kuan locality on Delhi-Faridabad border, one confronts the sharp line of division between natural, necessary and encroachment. The informal housing as well as new planned development is taking up spaces abandoned after closure of mining activities. People taking up the land are building to sustain their lives but are essentially developing by altering the natural terrain composed of Aravali hills. Urban Villages – The villages in proximity of major urban centres are fast losing their rural character owing to easy access to money, services and material, jobs and opportunities. Such rural centres are no longer dependent on agriculture alone. This material transition is often coupled with eroding worth of traditional knowledge and systems. The very systems which evolved due to sustainable nature and tendency to be in tandem with nature.
